Adolescent Oral Health Scheme

We are proud to offer free treatment for under 18’s, under the Adolescent Oral Health Scheme (AOHS).

The Adolescent Oral Health Scheme is a government-funded program that provides free basic dental treatment to New Zealand teenagers from Year 9 (around age 13-14) through to their 18th birthday. This important service helps ensure your teenager can maintain excellent oral health during these crucial developmental years.

Who is eligible?

All teenagers from Year 9 until they turn 18 are eligible for free dental treatment under this scheme. This includes students who are no longer at school - whether they're working, studying at university, or in training programs. International students are not covered by this scheme. Your teenager must be eligible to use New Zealand's health system to access these services.

What services are included?

The scheme covers comprehensive dental care including:

  • Regular dental examinations to assess teeth, gums, and overall oral health

  • X-rays when needed to detect decay and other issues not visible during examination

  • Fluoride applications to strengthen tooth enamel and prevent decay

  • Fissure sealants - protective coatings applied to back teeth to prevent decay

  • Fillings, tooth extractions (excluding orthodontic extractions), and root canal treatment

  • Restorative dental work

  • Professional oral health education and advice

What's NOT included?

The scheme does not cover orthodontic treatment (such as braces), cosmetic procedures like tooth whitening, or dental injuries from accidents (which are typically covered by ACC). Some advanced treatments or premium materials may incur additional costs, so it's worth discussing options with your dental practice.

How often can my teenager access care?

Teenagers are entitled to one comprehensive dental examination each calendar year, plus additional appointments if problems arise. For 17-year-olds, a final examination can be scheduled up to 9 months after their previous visit to ensure they receive care before aging out of the system.

Where can my teenager receive treatment?

Services are delivered through private dental practices that have contracts with Health New Zealand (Te Whatu Ora). Not every dental practice participates in this scheme, so it's important to choose a contracted provider. Some regions also offer mobile dental services that visit high schools for convenience.

As a participating practice in this scheme, we're able to provide your teenager with comprehensive dental care at no cost to your family. We encourage booking annual check-ups early in the year to ensure your teenager receives the preventive care they need.
